Back to School in College Park: Does Your Student Need Insurance on Campus?

Move-in day at the University of Maryland is a whirlwind. Boxes everywhere, loft beds being assembled, and parents trying not to cry in the parking lot. But once the futon is in place and the mini-fridge is stocked, a practical question usually comes up: “Is my kid still covered by my car insurance on campus?”

It’s a fair question. Your student is heading off to College Park, maybe with a car, maybe without. Understanding how their insurance works (or doesn’t) can save you from a nasty surprise down the road. Here’s what every Terp parent needs to know.

If Your Student Brings a Car to Campus

This is the most common scenario. Your student wants the freedom to drive to class, run errands, or head home on weekends. If they bring a car to College Park, the car needs insurance. Period.

Maryland law requires every registered vehicle to have active liability insurance. If your student gets pulled over or gets into an accident without proper coverage, the consequences are serious. Fines, license suspension, and a whole lot of headache.

The good news is that you usually don’t need a separate policy. In most cases, you can simply add your student and their car to your existing family policy. As long as your student’s permanent home address is still yours, and they’re not legally established as a Maryland resident with their own address, they’re typically covered under your policy.

But if your student’s car is registered in Maryland and they’re using it primarily in College Park, some insurers might want to see it rated at that location. Premiums can vary based on zip code, and College Park has its own risk factors. Think busy roads, pedestrian traffic, and the inevitable fender bender in a crowded parking lot.

If Your Student Doesn’t Bring a Car

Here’s where a lot of parents get confused. Your student is heading to UMD without a car. No wheels, no insurance needed, right? Not exactly.

If your student doesn’t own a car, they don’t need a personal auto policy. But they’re not off the hook entirely. What if they borrow a friend’s car for a trip to the grocery store? What if they rent a car for spring break or they use a Zipcar for a quick errand?

In cases like these, the insurance follows the vehicle. So if they borrow a friend’s car, the friend’s insurance usually covers them. If they rent a car or use a car-sharing service, those companies typically provide their own liability coverage.

But if your student is away at school and not driving a car regularly, you might want to ask your insurer about a “student away from home” discount. Some companies lower your premium if your student is more than 100 miles from home and doesn’t have regular access to a vehicle.

The Insurance Gaps No One Talks About

There are two situations that catch families off guard every year.

The dorm move: If your student is using their car to haul boxes and furniture to College Park, they’re covered. But if they have an accident on the way, that’s an at-fault claim on your record. Make sure they understand the responsibility of driving that car.

The rideshare trap: Lots of UMD students drive for Uber or Lyft on the side. But personal auto policies typically don’t cover commercial use. If your student gets into an accident while driving for a rideshare company, their personal policy will likely deny the claim. They need additional commercial coverage for that.

What to Do Before Move-In Day

Before you send your student off to College Park, take a few minutes to check in with your insurance agent. Ask these questions:

  • Is my student covered on my current policy while at school?
  • Do we need to change the rating location to College Park?
  • Are there any student discounts we qualify for?
  • Does my policy cover a rental car or car-sharing service?

It takes ten minutes, and it could save you from a major headache later.
