Everyone knows that dogs are part of the family, so when it comes to the car they should be treated with the same mentality. Bringing your dog in the car can be just as fun for them as it is for you so keep it that way with these helpful safety tips.
Tips to keep your dog safe
1.) Do not let them sit in the front of the car while driving. If the dog is not harnessed in or on a leash, there is a chance the dog will start to wander around, distracting you and putting yourself and others in danger. If you have a small dog, never let them sit on your lap while you drive. The backseat is the safest place for you, your passengers and your dog. Nowadays there are plenty of devices that act as seatbelts to help protect your dog, keeping him from moving around and jumping.
2.) Just like everyone else dogs need water. Make sure your dog is staying hydrated during a long drive, especially if they are anxious and panting. Stopping every so often for a water break is important. Also, stopping to let your dog walk around will help avoid stiffness and prevent future hip pains that dogs are prone to.
3.) An easy fix if you are struggling to control your dog in the car is to purchase a small gate that will act as a barrier so your dog cannot climb up to the front. For smaller dogs, a crate can work well to contain their movement.
The most important thing is to be aware and know your dog. If you are in a long car ride and notice that your dog is starting to get anxious make sure you take the proper steps to help him relax. Sometimes the fix can be as simple as cracking a window to get more air flow- or giving them a doggie treat!
