New Technology Being Tested On Vehicle’s In Maryland

Let’s be honest, most of us like to enjoy a drink or two during a night dinner or on a night out with friends. However, nobody wants to worry about a ride home. The consequences of drunk driving are severe and potentially life-altering.

When it comes to getting behind the steering wheel after drinking alcohol, you not only put yourself at risk, but you also put your passengers and everyone else on the road at risk. Intoxicated drivers have injured and even killed their passengers or others on the road as a result of drunk driving.

To battle drunk driving, the state of Maryland has imposed more serious punishments when caught drunk driving; some drivers have even gone to prison for driving under the influence. However, this still does not prevent people from attempting to get home themselves after a few drinks at dinner or at the bar. So, Maryland officials are now testing new technology that is being installed in vehicles when they are manufactured.

The Driver Alcohol Detection System For Safety

  • This system will be built into the vehicle, and there will no longer be a need for a separate device to start your vehicle. This system will consist of sensors in the vehicle that will pick up levels of alcohol inside the vehicle.

The Vehicle Will Start

  • This new system will actually allow your vehicle to start, even if the alcohol detected is above the legal limit. However, this is only to allow you to charge your mobile device so that you may call someone for a ride or even a car service to safely get you home.

Testing Phase

  • The Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) will be installing this technology into eight of its vehicles to see how it will work over the course of about one year. This information and testing data will be given to manufacturers to use for critical insight to integrate this technology as an option for new vehicles to help keep everyone safe on the road.
