Maryland MVA Extends The Deadline for 43k License Holders With Paperwork Due For Real ID

We are sure that you have heard about the new Real ID requirements by the federal government and the deadline that has been put on Maryland license holders. Well, we are happy to report some good news if you are one of the remaining 43,000 residents that hold a Maryland license and have not yet submitted paperwork to get a new license that meets new federal government guidelines.

What is Real ID?

In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks that occurred on Septemeber 11, 2011, a law was passed to make security features for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards. The new Real ID will feature a star on your ID that will show whoever is checking your ID that you are now in accordance with the new federal regulations.

What Happens If I Miss This Extended Deadline?

If you happen to be miss this extended deadline, then, unfortunately, your license will be made invalid by the MVA. You will still have your driving privileges unless you have some driving infractions that would require your license to be suspended. However, if you do happen to be stopped by law enforcement and do not have the required Real ID, then you license, or ID will potentially be confiscated. Not only this but as of October 1, 2020, if you still do not have your Real ID qualifications met, then you will not be able to board an airplane as TSA will deny you entry.

When Is The New Deadline?

The previous deadline was in June, and the new deadline is now July 3, 2019, to ensure MD license holders ensure their licenses are Real ID compliant.
